The V/H/S franchise returns with V/H/S/Mixtape, a music-themed horror anthology featuring RZA, Flying Lotus, and more.
The V/H/S franchise is reinventing itself again, as the series has announced it is going in a pretty interesting direction with the upcoming V/H/S/Mixtape, which takes the usual found-footage format and mixes it with something that actually makes a lot of sense for horror – music.
I mean, if you think about it, music has always been a huge part of horror, because a creepy soundtrack can completely change how you feel about a scene, a strange noise in the background can make something ordinary feel terrifying, and there is something naturally unsettling about distorted voices, strange recordings, and sounds you cannot explain, so taking that idea and building an entire V/H/S movie around it feels like a pretty good step.
The new film will focus on the connection between music and horror, exploring how sound, rhythm, and audio can be used to haunt, manipulate, or completely destroy people, so expect the usual mix of found footage scares, strange supernatural ideas, psychological horror, and plenty of disgusting practical effects. (Hopefully)
One of the biggest reasons though I’m extra interested in this one is the lineup of filmmakers involved – V/H/S/Mixtape is bringing together a really unusual group of creators, including people who already have strong connections to music – RZA, best known as a member of the Wu-Tang Clan as well as a filmmaker behind movies like The Man with the Iron Fists, is directing a segment, and then there is Flying Lotus, who will be creating music video-style segments for the film.
The movie is also bringing in Ernest Dickerson, a filmmaker with a long history in both cinema and television, as he worked as a cinematographer on several major projects before moving into directing, including films like Juice and Bones, and he also directed episodes of shows like The Walking Dead and The Wire, so he definitely knows how to build some atmosphere.
Then we have David Moreau, the director behind the wild one-shot zombie movie MadS, a film I am a big fan of, so his involvement makes me think we could get something more experimental here?
Probably the most unexpected part of the announcement, though, is that filmmaker Renee Zhan will be bringing something completely different to the franchise – her segment will feature original puppets created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and that is not something you usually associate with the blood-soaked world of V/H/S.
The film will also feature a special appearance from legendary metal band GWAR, because apparently a horror anthology about music needed even more mayhem, and there will also be a music video directed by Tobias Forge, the frontman of Swedish metal band Ghost, marking his first time stepping behind the camera.
The V/H/S franchise has been around since 2012, but it also feels like it has found a second life since moving to Shudder, where the recent movies have been much more confident about experimenting with different styles and ideas, rather than just repeating the same formula.
V/H/S/Mixtape arrives on Shudder on October 9, 2026, just in time for the Halloween season, and I’ll definitely be checking this one out – if nothing else, I’m curious to see what happens when found-footage horror meets heavy metal, bizarre music videos, and Jim Henson-style puppetry.
As a fan of the series, I have gives some thoughts on a few of the films, although I still need to get around to doing the rest, and giving them an official ranking!
