The Night Marchers is bringing Hawaii’s ancient warrior legend into independent horror, with Terror Films picking up the found-footage movie for release.
I have a weakness for found-footage horror that digs into local legends, especially when the filmmakers are willing to build the movie around something that actually feels tied to the place rather than just dropping a generic demon into an American house and calling it a day.
The Night Marchers is doing something along those lines, with Terror Films picking up the horror movie for release and the story revolving around one of Hawaii’s most famous supernatural legends – the Night Marchers.
If you’re not familiar with the legend, the Night Marchers are said to be the ghostly procession of ancient Hawaiian warriors, and there are plenty of stories about people hearing drums, seeing torchlight or encountering the procession after dark.
Obviously, whether you believe any of that is another question entirely, but it is exactly the sort of folklore that horror filmmakers can have a lot of fun with.
It isn’t exactly a new horror concept of course, but I don’t really care about that if the material has enough atmosphere behind it, and Hawaii is certainly a more interesting setting for this kind of story than yet another abandoned farmhouse in the middle of nowhere.
The Night Marchers is being released by Terror Films, which has become a familiar name for anyone who spends far too much time looking through the darker corners of the independent horror world.
The film joins the distributor’s growing collection of lower-budget genre movies, and this is exactly the sort of horror I tend to keep an eye on because you never quite know what you’re going to get.
I’m definitely curious about this one.
