Infirmary is a new found footage horror on Shudder set in an abandoned hospital.
Plot
A guard vanished on his first night at an old psych hospital in 2023. His bodycam footage shows unexplainable incidents that continue to baffle investigators.
What I Liked
- The abandoned hospital is easily the best thing about it, featuring enough rooms and corridors to make the location work in its favor.
- There are a few creepy moments where you’re looking around the background to see if something is there.
- The mannequins are a good idea and probably some of the better imagery in the film.
- A few moments have some really good atmosphere.
- The use of darkness is used well enough.
What I Didn’t Like
- The story is pretty thin and I don’t think there’s enough going on underneath the found footage hospital idea.
- The characters aren’t particularly good either, which made some of the later stuff feel less effective.
- Some of the scare attempts are just predictable, with too much focus on loud noises = good.
- It doesn’t really do anything new, and as said, it just feels all a bit too simple.
- I also think they could have done more with the hospital itself because it is easily the most interesting part of the whole film.
- Not enough tension and strong atmosphere, where the predictability of the film makes it suffer in that department.
Final Verdict on Infirmary
I was really looking forward to watching Infirmary on Shudder, but I have to say, I ended up quite disappointed, where I liked the idea behind the film more than the actual film.
The abandoned hospital is a really good setting for horror when used well, and while there are a few creepy moments that worked for me, there just isn’t enough to make it really stand out much at all.
It also gets a bit slow in places, which doesn’t help when there isn’t a particularly strong story keeping things moving, but if you like found footage and abandoned hospital horror, there might be just about enough here to make it worth watching on Shudder, I just wouldn’t go into it expecting anything special or a new favorite.
