Lake Mungo Revisited is a 3 hour 45 minute documentary packed with behind-the-scenes footage, cast interviews and more.
If you thought you had already seen everything there was to see about Lake Mungo, apparently not – buried on the 4K collectors edition release is Lake Mungo Revisited, a ridiculously long three hour and 45 minute documentary that digs right into the making of the 2008 Australian found footage horror film, with behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with the cast and crew, filmmakers talking about the movie, and a pretty good amount of additional material.
Basically, if you’ve watched Lake Mungo enough times that you can practically recite half the movie, here’s another nearly four hours of stuff to obsess over.
This Isn’t a Normal Making-Of
The first thing worth knowing is that Lake Mungo Revisited isn’t some short retrospective that gets thrown onto the disc because somebody decided every horror movie needs a “20 Years Later” featurette, because at three hours and 45 minutes, it’s an enormous documentary in its own right.
The documentary is included as part of the 4K release and pulls together interviews with people connected to the film, including writer/director Joel Anderson and members of the cast and production team, while the extras also include a pretty impressive collection of filmmaker interviews, including Justin Kurzel, Mike Flanagan and Eduardo Sánchez, alongside interviews with Lake Mungo’s own cast and crew.
Lake Mungo Has Become One of Those Horror Movies
It’s kind of funny what has happened with Lake Mungo over the years.
When it came out in 2008, it wasn’t some giant mainstream horror hit. It was a strange, quiet Australian mockumentary/found footage movie that took a very different approach to the supernatural.
Over time, though, the movie developed that thing horror fans love – the “you need to watch this” reputation, where it gets passed around from one horror fan to another, people argue about the ending, people freeze-frame certain scenes, and eventually somebody who hasn’t seen it gets told that there’s one particular image they absolutely need to look out for.
And to be fair, lots also find it a bit boring, too, but personally I think it’s a brilliant movie from different angles, but if you’re a fan of the movie, this is basically Lake Mungo: The Other Movie.
