Be My Cat: A Film for Anne (2015) Review

Be My Cat: A Film for Anne is a Romanian found footage horror with a brilliant performance from Adrian Tofei.

Plot

An aspiring filmmaker goes to shocking extremes to convince Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway to star in his film.

Good Points

  • Adrian Tofei is easily the biggest reason this film works, as his character is creepy, funny and uncomfortable to watch all at the same time.

  • The low-budget style actually helps the movie rather than hurts it, where the rough edges really do add to the uncomfortable atmosphere instead of it just making it feel a bit cheap – and that’s not always the case in FF.

  • The idea behind the film is genuinely different, and even though found footage has been done countless times, this felt like someone taking the genre in a much stranger direction, and that risk paid off.

  • The mix of dark humor and horror is handled fine most of the time – we get moments where you will be laughing at how bizarre things become, only for the film to quickly remind you how disturbing it actually is.

  • This films is all about tension and atmosphere, so if you’re a scare fest kind of person, it might not do much for ya.

  • The amount of effort Adrian Tofei has put into the project really shows – as the writer, director and lead actor, he clearly had a strong vision for the film and completely committed himself to making it work.

  • Even with its flaws, there is something about the atmosphere and Tofei’s performance that makes this one stay with you, which is always good as I have said before.

  • It feels like it has its own identity, and it doesn’t feel like a copy of other found footage films, which is pretty rare in this genre.

Bad Points

  • Some of the scenes feel like they could have been trimmed down a bit, as while the realistic style works fine, there are some moments where the film loses a little momentum.

  • Some of the dialogue feels a little unnatural at times too.

  • Adrian Tofei’s performance is so strong that the other performances sometimes struggle to compete, and while the supporting cast are fine, but they don’t really have the same impact.

  • There are moments where the ambition of the idea feels bigger than the budget and execution – the concept is fantastic, but not every part of the film reaches the same level.

  • Some scenes rely heavily on repetition, with similar interactions happening multiple times.

Final Verdict on Be My Cat: A Film for Anne

Be My Cat: A Film for Anne is a strange, and uncomfortable film with some rough edges, but Adrian Tofei’s incredible performance and the film’s atmosphere really make it work overall.
