Sean Hogan’s found-footage horror The Dark Gets In premieres at Beyond Fest, blending mock-true crime, mystery and supernatural horror.
Sean Hogan’s new horror film The Dark Gets In is heading to Beyond Fest for its world premiere on October 2, bringing a mock-true crime story that gradually takes its investigation into much darker territory.
Written and directed by Hogan, the film is described as a hybrid documentary-fiction horror that uses the familiar format of a true crime investigation to tell a story about a young girl whose disappearance appears to have no logical explanation.
A Disappearance With No Obvious Explanation
The story follows a documentary team investigating the disappearance of teenager Aisling, who vanishes from her home one night, where there are no obvious answers – security cameras apparently show nobody entering or leaving the house, while the police investigation fails to uncover anything that explains where she has gone.
Things take a stranger turn when a witness identifies the main suspect as Aisling’s brother – despite the fact that he has been dead for years, and at that point, the investigation starts moving away from anything resembling a conventional true crime case and towards something considerably more supernatural.
Sean Hogan Returns With Another Unsettling Horror
Hogan previously directed To Fire You Come At Last, and The Dark Gets In continues his interest in stories that sit somewhere between the recognisable and the uncanny, and Beyond Fest describes the film as an exploration of what happens when ancient malevolent entities encounter the modern digital world, while the film’s documentary approach gives the story a deliberately convincing true-crime feel.
The cast includes Charlotte Pyke, Cameron Lewis, Scott Burchell and Kezia Cotterell. Hogan wrote and directed the film, with cinematography from Paul Goodwin and Jim Hinson.
