The Blair Witch Project Gets VHS and Blu-ray Release With Restored 2024 Cut

The Blair Witch Project returns on VHS and Blu-ray with a restored 2024 cut, new extras, and the ultimate found footage release for fans.

There are some movies where the format is almost as important as the film itself, and The Blair Witch Project is probably one of the best examples of that, because this was a movie that convinced a huge number of people that they were watching something real – a bunch of forgotten tapes left behind in the woods after three film students disappeared – and the whole thing became a massive hit because it felt rough, uncomfortable, and because of the marketing campaign, real.

Now, The Blair Witch Project is getting a new physical media release on October 13, 2026, with both a VHS edition and a collector’s Blu-ray, and the big selling point is the restored 2024 theatrical cut it includes, which is finally getting a release in the United States after only being available internationally.

The restoration was created from the original Hi8 videotapes and 16mm film elements, which is exactly what fans of the movie would want, beecause with a film like this, the imperfections are the whole point – the shaky camera, the grain, the rough image quality – all those things that would normally be considered flaws are what made The Blair Witch Project work so well at the time, so cleaning it up too much would almost defeat the purpose.

The VHS release also includes the restored 2024 theatrical cut as mentioned, which feels like the version that was always meant to exist on the format, although I am not sure how many of us still own VHS recorders?

The Blu-ray release though is the bigger package here, and it is basically designed for fans who have followed the movie since 1999, because it includes three different versions of the film: the restored 2024 theatrical cut, the 2024 festival cut, and the original 35mm theatrical version that audiences first saw when the movie became a worldwide horror phenomenon.

The collector’s edition also comes with a new poster from artist Ken Taylor and a 104-page booklet filled with behind-the-scenes material, which includes production notes, footage logs, prop lists with handwritten notes, and other pieces of history from the making of the film.

There are also plenty of extras included, with new interviews featuring Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, along with a tribute to cinematographer Neal Fredericks, whose work helped create the entire feeling of being lost in the woods with nothing but a camera and a terrible decision to keep walking.

The release also digs into the wider Blair Witch universe, including the mockumentaries, the mythology that grew around the movie, and the way the franchise continued to exist outside the original film – it’s fair to say this doesn’t sound like a release that is simply a cash grab.

Whether you love or hate The Blair Witch Project (and I know people are very divided on it), there is no denying the impact it had, as it changed how horror movies were marketed, helped push found footage into the mainstream, and proved that sometimes the scariest thing you can show people is a shaky camera pointed into a dark forest.

Now, all these years later, it is coming back in the one format that makes the most sense.

Now to wait for the apparent Blair Witch Project reboot that is happening.

You can Pre-order the VHS and Blu-ray releases from Lionsgate.
