The Visit is a pretty solid movie to watch, even if it is a little predictable.
Synopsis
Two siblings become increasingly frightened by their grandparents’ disturbing behavior while visiting them on vacation.
The Visit Good Points
Punchy, Controlled Atmosphere
I really liked the tone and atmosphere of the film, and it all quickly becomes subtly unsettling.
Day/Night Structure
Calm, slightly off daytime scenes contrast very nicely with some genuinely unsettling night scenes, and it builds the anticipation naturally.
Deanna Dunagan
Deanna Dunagan as ‘nana’ is excellent, with her unpredictable movements and behavior that help create a persistent sense of dread
Quiet Tension from the Grandfather
Less overtly threatening, he does contribute to the unease though through subtle hints that something is off, and keeps the tension going when he needs to.
Gradual Reveal
Even when the answers appear, they preserve discomfort.
Minimalistic Focus
A simple setup, few distractions, and no unnecessary subplots help maintain tight pacing and a coherent narrative.
Atmosphere Over Gimmicks
The horror here leans on mood, slow buildup, and small details rather than anything over the top, and the restraint works well, especially in some of the key scenes.
Consistent Tone (Mostly)
For the most part, the film sticks to its uneasy, off-kilter mood, letting suspense carry the story instead of over-relying on any flashy tricks.
The Visit Bad Points
Uneven Dialogue
Some of the kids conversations swing a bit between believable and unnatural, and isn’t as consistent at it maybe could be.
Predictable Patterns
The narrative follows pretty familiar beats for its style.
Weak Humor
Attempts at humor are fairly weak, and often disrupts the otherwise unsettling tone rather than complementing it.
Occasional Over-Reliance on Format
While mostly purposeful, some camera moments lean a bit too much on the “found footage” conceit.
Predictable Horror Beats
The day/night rhythm and some of the grandmother’s behaviors become familiar before their full impact hits, and while it isn’t too bad, you notice the predictability at times.
Final Thoughts on The Visit
When it works, it works well, with some quietly unnerving and tightly executed atmosphere and tension, and for me, is one of M. Night Shyamalan’s better movies.
