Buffet Infinity is bizarre, strange, and sometimes overwhelming, but it’s also certainly an experience.
Synopsis
Echoing the Canadian comedy classic SCTV, crosscutting between original, low-budget TV ads to tell the sinister tale of two restaurants battling it out in the fictional town of Westridge County.
Buffet Infinity Good Points
- Well, this is a film that certainly commits to its own weirdness and some very strange ideas, where it never plays it safe and just keeps going, so you will know pretty quickly if this is for you, and thankfully for me it certainly was.
- Humor is obviously very subjective, but I loved it here, with most of my laughs coming from watching people just acting like completely ridiculous situations are perfectly normal.
- I also never got the feeling that the film was repeating the same joke over and over, because every time I thought I understood its rhythm, it found other ways to push things further and certainly stranger.
- If you’ve ever watched random local commercials late at night, you’ll know exactly the vibe this is going for – cheap ads, awkward presenters, weird enthusiasm, and a sense that everything was filmed five minutes before it aired, and the film captures that energy brilliantly.
- Now, it would’ve been VERY easy to just recreate old TV ads and call it a day here, but thankfully it only uses that style as a starting point to builds something much stranger around it.
- All the cast play everything completely straight, which is exactly what this kind of film needs and where most of the laughs came from as said, and all of that really helps sell even the most ridiculous moments.
- The film also never stops to explain every little thing going on, which would have just upset the rhythm completely.
- It manages to balance comedy and discomfort incredibly well without forcing either side too hard, but don’t expect much ‘traditional’ horror.
- After a while I did completely give up trying to guess where things were heading, because this movie operates on its own weird logic, which is of course part of the charm.
- Whether you love it or hate Buffet Infinity, there are scenes and ideas here that will at least stay with you I think.
Buffet Infinity Bad Points
- The structure and humor of this film certainly won’t work for everyone, and while this isn’t necessarily a bad point, as it isn’t trying to be for everyone, it’s worth mentioning, and if I had a ‘neutral points’ section I would put it in that.
- Most of the pacing works, but there are definitely scenes that go on for longer than they really need to.
- It also occasionally become a bit overwhelming, as while I enjoyed it overall, there were moments where I felt like I needed a a bit of a breather from it all.
Final Thoughts on Buffet Infinity
Buffet Infinity is very confident in what it’s doing, but what’s it doing certainly won’t be for a lot of people, as it’s a very niche film, but if you dig the vibe, you will love it, but I had a great time with it, even when I had absolutely no idea where it was going next.
It’a bizzare for all the right reasons, just make sure you’re in the right mindset for this kind of movie.
