The Conspiracy review

The Conspiracy Review (2012)

The Conspiracy is an underrated found footage film, and well worth a watch.

Synopsis

Two young filmmakers select a crazed conspiracy theorist as the subject for their next project, but they soon come to believe that the man isn’t as delusional as they originally thought.

My Thoughts

I remember watching The Conspiracy a while ago, and when I rewatched it last weekend, I then remembered how good and underrated this film is.

Firstly, it plays out more like a thriller than traditional horror film. It’s more of a “creeps up on you with a quiet, persistent unease” kind of film.

It’s also really well made. The camera work and editing is really good, and I think the filmmakers actually cared about making it look good without losing that “real” vibe that found footage usually goes for.

The film captures that obsession and paranoia you see with conspiracy theorists, and that line between healthy skepticism and just believing anything just because that can go into very unhealthy territory.

Don’t expect too many loud noises or sudden scares though, but it does have a some unsettling moments and a creepy vibe.

I also like and appreciate how it refuses to give you any easy answers, and the ending leaves you with a lot of doubt and questions surrounding everything.

And while this kind of open-endedness can be frustrating in some movies, here it’s not because it taps into the real nature of conspiracy theories themselves, and how they’re often impossible to fully prove or disprove.

It’s genuinely a pretty solid, smart, creepy, and thoughtful film. Definitely worth watching if you want something a bit different from the usual found footage horror fare.

Good Points

Clear and Polished Found Footage – It all looks pretty crisp and is well-edited.

Acting – Most of the cast deliver.

Soundtrack – A good soundtrack can really make a good film even better, and here it does that.

Bad Points

Predictable Moments – It does fall into the cliche’s trap at times.

Horror Elements – It’s labelled as a horror film, and in some ways it is, but if you’re looking for traditional scares, you will be disappointed.

Is The Conspiracy Worth Watching?

Yep, it’s quite a clever take on the found footage genre with a decent atmosphere. Remember, it’s a PG-13 film, but it does have an unsettling feeling to it all, especially towards the end.
