The Triangle (2016)

The Triangle (2016) Review

I liked The Triangle overall, but it is a very strange movie.

Synopsis

Four filmmakers travel to a secluded Montana commune, answering a cryptic postcard from a missing friend, only to discover the isolated community holds a bizarre, ancient secret involving a mysterious object (a dinosaur skull) that triggers strange phenomena, unsettling visions, and a dark, cyclical fate.

My Thoughts on The Triangle

Good Points

Solid Camerawork

The camera work is steady and clear, where you can actually see what’s happening, which makes the strange events happening far less frustrating.

Pacing

The story moves steadily enough, and while some will find it too slow, I enjoyed the atmospheric story telling vibe.

Weirdly Thoughtful

The film plays with ideas like escaping modern life and returning to a primitive existence, and while it’s subtle, it also gives the story some extra weight beyond just “creepy things happen.”

Strong Performances

The cast are good here, and react pretty naturally to the weird stuff happening around them.

Mix of Horror and Sci-Fi

The shapeshifting creature and “dream” elements give it a unique strange edge, and it feels like it’s at least trying something different.

Ambiguous Ending

The ending leaves things open to interpretation, and it works pretty well here.

Bad Points

Slow Start

The first act takes a while to get moving, and could have offered a bit more early on.

Dense Concepts

The commune, the dreams, the dinosaur skull – there’s a lot of strangeness going on, and it felt a bit confusing at times.

Limited Emotional Connection

I did find it hard to care about the characters that much.

Final Thoughts on The Triangle

I liked it overall, and it has some good tension and atmosphere.

It’s fairly strange though, and sometimes I was left wondering where it was actually going, but it’s worth a watch for anyone tired of the same old horror formulas.
