Deadstream Review

Deadstream Review (2022)

Deadstream is a found footage film that brings the laughs and the horror and blends them together expertly.

Synopsis

Deadstream follows Shawn Ruddy (Joseph Winter), who is a disgraced YouTuber who has been cancelled and is now attempting comeback by live streaming a night in a haunted house.

My Thoughts

Deadstream is hands down one of my favorite found footage films, and one of my favorite comedy films too full stop.

The movie masterfully blends the humor and horror genre, and creates a rollercoaster of suspense and laughs.

The movie is a brilliant satire of internet culture, with Shawn embodying the desperate, fame hungry persona of a YouTube star, with his exaggerated reactions, constant need for validation, and willingness to exploit danger for content.

It’s both utterly absurd and quite realistic.

The found footage style used in the movie feels pretty fresh too, and visually techniques are used in the film that really helps to keep you engaged.

Joseph Winter nails his performance as Shawn, and not only does he star in the movie but he wrote, directed and produced it along with his wife, Vanessa Winter.

Shaun’s reactions to what is happening around him are fun to watch, and it adds brilliant humor into the film that will make you laugh, but the movie also has some genuinely good creepy moments too, and the blend of humor and horror is handled expertly.

It’s quite a chaotic film at times, and as mentioned it is all about Shaun, a character who is obnoxious and oblivious to any self awareness, and even though he has many faults, by the end of the film you end up rooting for him.

It’s like you are watching an actual live stream, and you the viewer become part of the experience, and we witness fans commenting and even sharing information to try and help Shaun in real time.

The ending is really well done too, and you will get strong Evil Dead vibes throughout the film but in particular the ending.

Deadstream is a film that should be on more peoples horror comedy top lists, as it’s brilliant, and deserves a mention alongside films such as Tucker & Dale vs. Evil and Shaun of the Dead.

OK, maybe not as good as Shaun of the Dead, but that’s a very high bar, isn’t it?

Good Points

Unique Blend of Horror and Comedy: Deadstream balances some genuine jump scares with laughter, and this mix is done brilliantly.

Strong Satire of Internet Culture: The film cleverly critiques the fame hungry influencers and the absurdity of online personas, and Shawn’s character feels exaggerated yet relatable at the same time.

Creative Use of The Found Footage Style: The multiple camera angles and dynamic setups the film uses helps keep everything fresh.

Bad Points

Pacing Issues in the Middle: While the film starts strong and ends with a bang, some sections in the middle feel a little bit repetitive at times.

Is It Worth Watching?

Oh yes.

The film delivers some genuine scares alongside laugh out loud moments, thanks to its sharp critique of internet culture and creative use of the found-footage format.

Watch it and watch it right now.

Hello fellow found footage nerds.

I watch a lot of found footage horror movies, so decided to do a simple page with all the reviews of the ones I watch, and hopefully make this site an index of hundreds of reviews.
