Strange Harvest is directed by Stuart Ortiz, who also co-directed ‘Grave Encounters’
Synopsis
Detectives are thrust into a chilling hunt for Mr. Shiny, a sadistic serial killer from the past whose return marks the beginning of a new wave of grotesque, otherworldly crimes tied to a dark, cosmic force.
My Thoughts
It Plays It Straight
The best thing this film does is how it just commits fully. You never get that sense that the filmmakers are desperate for you to think they’re clever. It’s all presented dead serious and is better off for it.
Zero Smugness
So many faux-documentary horror films can’t resist a little self-satisfaction, but this one doesn’t have time for that. It just tells its story like it’s supposed to.
The Little Touches Work
The film has really nailed the tiny details that make a fake crime doc feel real. Kudos.
The Narration
They’ve got this gravelly-voiced narrator who sounds like he’s smoked half a forest and seen too much bad shit in his life, and he doesn’t overdo it, either, which is always good.
The Gore
When it goes violent, it’s not fun splatter horror, it’s the uncomfortable kind of gore that makes you reconsider your dinner plans.
Effects Are Convincing
The practical effects here are done well, and everything looks like it actually happened.
It Hooked Me
Once it gets going, you’re stuck. It builds that slow, sinking feeling that keeps you locked in until the end, even with the odd flaws the film does have.
The Acting
A few of the performances overplay it a bit. You can almost hear the director yelling from behind the camera at them. Well, not really, but you know what I mean.
Some Shots Are Too Clean
The “found footage” sections look suspiciously nice at times. You’re supposed to believe this came from a dusty police evidence box, but it’s lit like someone set it up for a photo shoot.
Breaks Its Own Illusion
Whenever the lighting or framing is too good, it snaps you out of it a bit. A fake documentary lives and dies on its ability to keep its mask on.
One-note Pacing
It’s a serious film from start to finish, which is fine in theory, but without any tonal shifts it can feel like you’re wading through the same mood for a bit too long.
Not a Casual Watch
You need to sit down and give it all your full attention, otherwise you’ll miss the point.
Won’t Work For Everyone
If you’re not into slow, grim, and methodical horror, it’s going to feel like a chore rather than an experience.
Is Strange Harvest Worth Watching?
I enjoyed it, and would say Strange Harvest is worth watching, but it’s a slow burn that I think some might find boring.
But if you like stuff that feels uncomfortably real most of the time, give it a try.
