The Night Is Young is a found footage hybrid vampire film that mixes genres, and a film that’s a bit different and quite clever.
The Night Is Young Synopsis
Nora, an influencer, who along with her brother are filming her failed dates for a video blog. Through a turn of events, she ends up on a date with a female vampire, and soon they find themselves in the crosshairs of a group of murderous vampire hunters.
My Thoughts on The Night Is Young
Directed by Patrick Rea, who also co-wrote the script alongside Sarah McGuire (Who plays Nora), The Night is Young is a movie that defies typical expectations for a vampire film, and one that blends elements of found footage alongside unconventional storytelling.
The film presents a premise that seems quite ripe for a standard horror movie: vampire hunters are on the prowl, and a vampire is lurking in the shadows, but rather than focusing solely on bloodshed and action, the film also dedicates significant time to exploring the relationship between Nora and Amelia.
This relationship develops as the film delves into the nuances of modern dating and personal connections, and the film has a mix of romantic tension with horror, which helps create a dynamic that distinguishes it from more traditional vampire movies.
I’m not usually a fan of YouTubers in movies, and I’m normally hoping they get their heads ripped off, but, Nora wasn’t so bad, and you actually find yourself rooting for her.
It takes on a more hybrid approach to the found footage genre, and while it incorporates the shaky camera style that is often synonymous with found footage, it avoids some of the pitfalls commonly associated with it.
It’s also obvious they didn’t have a ton of cash to throw around when making this film, and you can see it in the effects, but it’s not as cringeworthy as you’d expect, and it actually looks decent enough for what it is.
And even though it’s low-budget, the cinematography isn’t shit either, and the movie avoids that awful “it’s too dark, I can’t see what’s going on” problem that so many low-budget films fall into.
The film’s pacing can feel a bit uneven at times, with long stretches focused on character development, but the story’s emphasis on relationship dynamics and character motivations takes precedence over everything else, which might not be to everyone’s tastes, or what they want from a vampire film.
The Night is Young though presents a unique, and, at times, thought-provoking take on the vampire genre, with a focus on character and mood rather than fast-paced horror.
I thought it was decent enough for a low-budget vampire film, and if you want something from a vampire film that’s a little more character-driven, and a little more subtle, this might be your thing.
It’s a bit weird, and a bit different, but it’s not bad, and I appreciated what was attempted, and found it watchable enough.

The Night Is Young on IMDB
The Night Is Young Good Points
Nora – Nora comes across as a genuinely likeable and relatable protagonist, and it’s quite refreshing because, often in films involving YouTubers or influencers, they’re written as obnoxious stereotypes.
Atmospheric Cinematography – The cinematography manages to create an intimate vibe without resorting to ultra-dark scenes.
Blend of Genres – It’s not just a horror movie or a romance or a found footage experiment, it’s a mix of emotional connection, horror tension, and found footage aesthetic, which helps creates a tone that’s fairly unique and a little unpredictable.
The Night Is Young Bad Points
Fairly Predictable – The film follows a fairly predictable path in terms of story, with not much to surprise you, and while the film has a unique setup, it doesn’t take many risks with the narrative.
Underdeveloped Vampire Lore – I would have liked to have learned more about the background regarding the vampires.
Won’t Be For Everyone – The film will definitely not be for everyone, especially if you’re expecting lots of vampire action, it mixes genres as mentioned above, and while I appreciated it, I think the film will have a limited appeal.
Is The Night Is Young Worth Watching?
Yes, but it definitely depends on what you’re looking for.
If you are open to character-driven stories, and appreciate a weird but heartfelt blend of romance and horror, with a scrappy, unique charm that tries something different, The Night Is Young might be what you’re looking for.
But if you are looking for more of a traditional straight up vampire horror film, it might not satisfy your thirst, and I think this is very much a movie for a niche audience, and some might struggle to connect with it, so going in with the right expectations will make a huge difference.
But I found it decent enough.
