The Houses October Built has Clowns, and more damn clowns! If you fancy some more clown horror and like haunted house themes, then you will probably enjoy this one.
Synopsis
Five friends who set out on a road trip in search of haunted house attractions, and find themselves targeted by a mysterious and disturbed group.
My Thoughts
Firstly, this movie seems to have two names, the one I am going by, and The Houses of Halloween, which to be fair, is a better name, but IMDB has it listed otherwise!
The Houses October Built is quite a decent and watchable found footage movie, about a group of friends traveling through the southern U.S. in an RV, searching for the most extreme haunted house experience just before Halloween.
The actors do a decent job and their journey actually feels like a real road trip, and the found footage style works quite well in this film.
The movie is enjoyable, and has some good moments, and I personally love the haunted house theme in films as you are constantly kept on edge while watching and the film captures that feeling pretty well.
It does have a lot of clichés as well though, and personally I have come to expect them in found footage films, but still, it’s annoying sometimes.
Also the ending is a bit ambiguous so if you don’t like those sort of endings, this one might piss you off.
The movie wasn’t as bad as I expected though and I would put it under the watchable category, but it wasn’t particularly great either. If you liked Hell House LLC, you will probably dig this, but it isn’t anywhere near as good.
But it has its moments!
Good Points
Believable Characters: The acting is pretty decent as I said above, and the chemistry between the characters makes their interactions feel natural and believable.
Minimal Shaky Cam: Unlike many found footage films, the shaky cam isn’t too distracting in this one.
Fun Halloween Vibe: The movie has a strong Halloween theme, with a storyline that’s a good fit for spooky season.
Bad Points
Clichéd Plot Elements: As the movie progresses, it falls into some predictable horror clichés, which while not surprising, is still frustrating.
Lack of Originality: Despite some strong moments, the movie doesn’t bring much new to the found footage or haunted house genres, and feels quite generic.
Supernatural Twist: While I don’t want to spoil too much, the twist the film had did not work for me and I wish they had not had gone down that route.
Is It Worth Watching?
The Houses October Built captures the creepy, claustrophobic atmosphere of haunted attractions fairly well and has some genuinely tense moments, and offers a decent found footage experience.
While it is not overly original and does fall into some predictable horror clichés, go into this one with moderate expectations and you might find it an entertaining watch.
