Synopsis
A ride-share driver desperate for viral fame, rigs his car with cameras to livestream a “lesson” in horror, murdering passengers to gain followers.
Spree Good Points
Social Satire
Lots of clever critiques of social media culture, fame obsession etc which is woven quite well into the story.
Filming Style
TGoPros, dashcams, livestreams, and split-screen editing is fun to watch.
Lead Performance
Joe Keery’s personality drives the film, and is quite a decent and balanced performance.
The Comedy
The film lands a lot of the jokes and darkly humorous moments, and again, it has a nice balance to it all with everything else going on.
Decent Tension
The editing formats used help builds the suspense, and it’s actually very immersive.
Runtime and Focus
The story moves quickly, which is always good for this type of film, and stays centered on Kurt’s obsession and its consequences, without much filler involved on sub plots.
Spree Bad Points
Over-the-Top Archetypes
While the satire works for many characters, others feel a bit too exaggerated and dated.pecting straight horror or a more traditional slasher may find it jarring.
Occasional Narrative Distraction
Split screens and multiple camera feeds are visually clever but can be a lot in the middle of intense sequences.
Commentary Depth
While the film critiques social media effectively, it doesn’t really deeply explore the all round consequences, although, that’s a bit nit picky I suppose!
