As far as remakes go, Quarantine isn’t too bad at all.
Synopsis
Quarantine is a found-footage horror remake of the Spanish film [REC], following reporter Angela Vidal and her cameraman, Scott, who become trapped inside a Los Angeles apartment building by the CDC.
After covering a routine call with firefighters, they discover a deadly, rabies-like virus turning residents into aggressive killers. The film documents their frantic, claustrophobic struggle for survival as the infected population grows and all escape routes are sealed.
My Thoughts on Quarantine
Good Points
Lead Performance
Jennifer Carpenter is intense as Angela – pushy, loud, and constantly chasing reactions, which fits the character and keeps the energy high.
Use Of Confinement
It nails the tight and claustrophobic feeling of the original, where the lack of space steadily increases tension.
Relentless Momentum
Once things go wrong, the movie rarely slows down.
Messy, Reactive Camerawork
The chaotic framing matches the panic on screen, and it reflects the confusion of the situation and maintains all the urgency.
he Threat
Framing the infection with medical language instead of supernatural terms makes the early stages feel more unsettling and believable, which is what you want from a found footage film.
Practical Effects
The violence and makeup effects are blunt and uncomfortable.
Bad Points
Exhausting Noise Level
Constant shouting and overlapping dialogue becomes a bit draining at times.
Unbreakable Camera Logic
The cameraman’s refusal to ever put the camera down is a little bit frustrating, obviously I understand why, but still.
Repetitive Conflict
Arguments repeat with minimal variation, where the same disagreements play out multiple times without adding much new information.
Overacted Emotional Peaks
Some scenes rely too heavily on volume instead of buildup – louder doesn’t always equal more intense.
Final Thoughts on Quarantine
As far as remakes go, it isn’t too bad at all, and even if you have seen [REC] and are a big fan of it, like I am, I still enjoyed this, even if it is a bit more irritating at times.
