Jabberjaw is a bit basic and predictable, but was OK for a one time watch.
Synopsis
A woman who, to escape an abusive relationship, goes camping with her friend and is stalked in the woods, where a mysterious presence begins to torment them, forcing them to question whether the stalker is her abuser or something more sinister and supernatural.
My Thoughts on Jabberjaw
Good Points
Emotional Core
The setup is quite good, where it links the horror to the personal struggles of Dylan trying to attempt to escape from an abusive partner.
Decent Performances
Olivia Khoshatefeh and Alexis Ingram deliver half decent believable performances, and they also have good chemistry.
Isolation and Atmosphere
A forest setting is always good, and it naturally enhances the suspense and unease with all the isolation felt.
Gradual Tension
The dread is built quite slowly, starting with little disturbances and escalating into more intense sequences, with the slow pacing allowing the suspense to grow.
Atmosphere
The film is heavily reliant on the sound and anticipation for the atmosphere and tension, rather than any excessive jump scares, and it is fairly restrained in that area.
Bad Points
Limited Shock Value
While I don’t mind the restraint, I am sure a lot of people might find it a bit too restrained as the supernatural elements are minimal, and the horror is primarily psychological.
Predictable
Several parts of Jabberjaw follow the familiar found footage tropes, which is a constant issue in low budget FF films to be fair.
Minimal Visual Effects
The supernatural elements are brief as mentioned, and while this helps with the psychological tension, a few more dramatic moments could have strengthened the horror.
Straightforward Narrative
The plot is easy to follow and doesn’t introduce any significant surprises.
Final Thoughts on Jabberjaw
I thought Jabberjaw was OK, and while a bit basic and predictable, it was OK for a one time watch.
Quite a safe film, but not too bad for a low budget found footage movie, as long as you aren’t expecting too many exciting jump scare moments.
