Dream Eater review

Dream Eater Review (2025)

Dream Eater is a emotionally charged film, and I enjoyed the themes on play here.

Synopsis

Dream Eater is about a documentary filmmaker, Mallory, who films her boyfriend Alex’s violent parasomnia during a remote cabin trip. As his condition worsens and becomes more sinister, she investigates his past and uncovers a mystery involving trauma, the occult, and an ancient evil.

My Thoughts on Dream Eater

Good Points

Performances

Mallory Drumm and Alex Lee Williams both perform well here, and you really believe in their relationship, which helps make the story a bit more effective.

Tension Building

I enjoyed the methodical buildup of unease, and the jump scares were used sparingly but some landed pretty well when used.

Clever Use of Setting

The isolation and intimate environment of the Laurentian Mountains cabin was good, and the filmmakers used lighting and camera angles pretty effectively to create the suspense.

Blend of Styles

It mixes traditional cinematography with documentary style shots, which keep the visuals interesting and also prevented the found footage from feeling too repetitive.

Psychological Focus

The film’s horror comes more from Alex’s unpredictable behavior, where the tension revolves around the emotional dynamic, exploring different themes.

Realistic Relationship Dynamics

Watching Mallory try to help Alex while also fearing for her safety felt pretty realistic, with their interactions of frustration, tenderness, and anxiety.

Minimalist Effects

I personally liked the restraint that the film showed, as it keeps the story focused on the emotional stakes rather than a spectacle, although I am sure others would want more from that aspect.

Bad Points

Underwhelming Supernatural Reveal

The Lovecraftian entity or force is barely shown, and I was left wanting a more dramatic visual or climactic moment.

Occasional Shaky Logic

There are some moments where it’s a bit unclear why certain events happen or why the camera captures even them.

Predictable Horror Tropes

Some sequences rely on familiar found footage tropes, but while not a huge issue, it made some of it a bit predictable.

Pacing Fluctuations

The first half builds the tension well, but a few sections in the second half slowed it down slightly, where some scenes drag without adding any new information.

Final Thoughts on Dream Eater

Dream Eater is a emotionally charged film, and I enjoyed the themes on play here.

It’s a thoughtful film that I am sure won’t be what everyone is expecting, but I thought it was decent enough.
