The Wild Man: Skunk Ape review

The Wild Man: Skunk Ape Review (2021)

The Wild Man: Skunk Ape has a concept with real potential, but the idea is stronger than the execution

Synopsis

The skunk ape, also known as the Florida Bigfoot, has been rumored to be responsible for several murders in South Florida. A documentary crew sets out to uncover the truth.

My Thoughts

Good Points

Intriguing Concept

I did like the premise of blending a missing person investigation with folklore, which feels like a natural fit for horror.

Strong Opening Sequence

The film sets it all up a documentary style introduction, showing interviews with locals and establishing the missing women cases, which makes it feel like you’re watching a true crime special.

Everglades Setting

The Florida swamps are atmospheric and add some natural suspense with its feeling of isolation.

Moments of Suspense

Some of the scenes where they trek through the forest or hear unexplained noises worked fairly well, even if they were few and far between.

Bad Points

Shift in Tone

After the first sequence, the film quickly abandons the documentary style presentation as shifts to generic found footage tropes.

Confusing Footage Presentation

Midway, additional clips are introduced without any explanation at all, which really disrupts the narrative flow and makes the internal logic of the story suffer a bit.

Weak Characters

Their reactions are often exaggerated or illogical, and the dialogue is pretty stiff too.

Pacing Problems

Long sequences of wandering in the forest or reviewing footage add very little and it just plods along.

Missed Opportunities

The film hints at originality early on, but it never fully capitalizes on it at all as it all becomes a tad bit messy.

Acting Limitations

While low-budget films rarely have stellar performances, here the actors often felt pretty flat.

Technical Inconsistencies

Although the opening documentary style works, later handheld and night vision shots are very shaky and occasionally it’s quite hard to follow.

Final Thoughts on The Wild Man: Skunk Ape

The Wild Man: Skunk Ape has a concept with real potential, but the idea is stronger than the execution, and the early promise the film shows is the best part of the movie, as it goes downhill from there.

Hello fellow found footage nerds.

I watch a lot of found footage horror movies, so decided to do a simple page with all the reviews of the ones I watch, and hopefully make this site an index of hundreds of reviews.
