The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan isn’t a bad film, and I certainly don’t regret watching it, but with a better final 3rd it could have been great.
The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan Synopsis
A young journalism student decides to return to her hometown to investigate a brutal murder that took place 30 years prior. Without much hope of finding any real answers, she interviews a series of local characters.
My Thoughts on The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan
The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan was one of those mixed experiences where I kept thinking, “Okay, this is actually decent,” then later, “Wait, what the hell are they doing now?”
The film starts strong, and for a good chunk of it, I was genuinely interested in what was happening. The film puts some real thought into making the characters feel quite authentic, and the dialogue wasn’t dumb as fuck either, with the two leads having pretty good chemistry.
The scare attempts are more the subtle kind, mostly. Little things that make you go, “Wait… did you see that?” But it does attempt some jump scares too. And the abandoned house feels properly creepy too, which is a huge win for me.
The story itself was good, too. It has that whole cold case mystery vibe that’s kinda cool if you like piecing stuff together. I liked that they didn’t spoon-feed everything to you.
But here’s where it falls apart a bit. The last 20 minutes.
The characters start making the dumbest decisions you can imagine. They abandon every ounce of logic they had in the first hour just so the plot can get to its conclusion.
And while I don’t obviously mind shaky cam action, even I was getting a bit annoyed, as it was a bit too much at the end when I couldn’t really work out what was happening. Was that just me?
The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan is a bit of a tease of a film. It starts off promising, with decent performances and some creepy moments, but then it falls flat when it counts.
The bones of a really good film are here, but they just couldn’t stick the landing. I can see what they were going for, and I appreciate the effort, even if the execution wobbles at the end.
But it’s still a film a found footage fan should watch, as it isn’t a bad film, and I certainly don’t regret watching it, but with a better final 3rd it could have been great.
