Damien 2021 found footage horror film

Damien Review (2021)

Damien has its moments, with some decent Irish humor thrown into the mix.

Damien Synopsis

Whilst making a documentary on their friend, the crew uncover a dark secret which leads to friction, betrayal and puts their lives in danger.

My Thoughts on Damien

Damien had been on my radar for a little bit, as I had heard decent things about it, so was happy to see it was on Found TV.

The humour in this film is spot on. It’s not polite, and it’s not clever, it’s just that beautiful, blunt, Irish brand of “f*ck it, we’re doing this” comedy. It isn’t a scary film, bit tense at times, but don’t expect jump scares.

The pacing is a bit meh at times, as the film kind of wanders a bit, and loses its momentum, especially in the first half, plus I wish it had gone on a bit longer, because just when you’re getting into it, it’s over.

But even with that, I still had am OK time watching it. The whole thing has this low-budget charm, and it works decently, that just leans into the weird, the wild, and the very Irish.

The film has a lot of jokes about gingers, too, and while I’ve got no horse in that race, they certainly commit to it.

The acting is alright too, nothing great, but they do the job.

Damien made me laugh on a few occasions. and it knows how to take the piss out of itself. It’s short, and full of Celtic weirdness.

Damien Good Points

Irish Humor – It’s raw, blunt, and funny in that way only Irish people can pull off without sounding like complete arseholes.

Self-Aware – This film knows it’s low-budget and doesn’t pretend otherwise. It leans into this chaos, which somehow makes it work even better.

Setting – The remote Irish forest? Perfect horror territory.

Damien Bad Points

Drags in Spots – Some scenes meander a bit, and are a bit pointless. Especially in the first half.

Not That Scary – Suspenseful? AT times. But scary? Not really. If you’re here for jump scares, jog on.

Too Short – At just over an hour, I wish it had gone on for a bit longer.

Is Damien Worth Watching?

Yeah, it’s worth a one time watch if you go in with low expectations, it made me chuckle at times. If you like some crude humor, and don’t just want jump scares, give it a go!
