The Creep Tapes

The Creep Tapes Season 1 Review (2024)

Mark Duplass returns in ‘The Creep Tapes’, and it gives you exactly what you would expect.

The Creep Tapes Synopsis

A serial killer lures videographers into his world with the promise of a paid job documenting his life; as the tape rolls, the killer’s questionable intensions surface with his increasingly odd behavior.

My Thoughts on The Creep Tapes

As a fan of the Creep films (Creep review, Creep 2 review), when I heard The Creep Tapes was releasing, I was very curious, and was hoping it wasn’t just going to be a lazy cash grab effort, and thankfully, it wasn’t, as The Creep Tapes actually hits the sweet spot pretty well.

Each of the episodes focuses on some poor schmuck who ends up in Josef’s creepy little web, where he either hires them with the promise of easy money, or they just wander into his path like a dumb animal, and then, of course, they realize they’ve made a huge mistake.

If you’re familiar with the films, you know what you are getting into, and there’s no grand plot, and no big twists to overcomplicate things. It’s just Josef being a complete freak and making you feel really uncomfortable, and that’s what we want.

Its got this weird balance of funny and terrifying that keeps you hooked, where you’re not sure if you should be laughing at Josef’s bizarre antics or cringing at how messed up he really is, and the guy’s got this charisma that makes you almost like him, even though he’s nuts.

And of course Peachfuzz makes a return, and they actually give you a bit of backstory on the whole thing, and they peel back the curtain a bit, showing you what made Josef the unhinged nutjob he is, and you start to understand how deep the madness goes.

Each episode’s only around 30 minutes, so it’s quick and to the point. You’re in, you’re freaked out, and you’re out. The pacing’s solid, and the whole thing is just messed up enough to make you keep watching.

Mark Duplass, who plays Josef, is brilliant, again, and he’s of course the best part of this whole thing, no question, and he makes the whole thing work so well, and delivers the impact you need from him.

The Creep Tapes just gives you exactly what you want, and it’s a perfect blend of horror and dark comedy, and if you’re into that kind of thing, you’re gonna love it.

And I can’t wait for season 2, which has been confirmed by Shudder.

The Creep Tapes Good Points

Mark Duplass – Mark Duplass is amazing. His portrayal of Josef is chilling yet oddly charming, making you both repelled and oddly entertained by the character.

Short and Sweet – It gets in, gets freaky, and gets out, which keeps the pacing tight and engaging.

Balance of Humor and Horror – It strikes a perfect mix of dark humor and horror, so you’re never too comfortable but still entertained by the absurdity of it all.

The Creep Tapes Bad Points

Predictable Format – The core structure of each episode might feel repetitive for some.

Less Dread Than the Movies – The Creep films had a slow burn feel where you felt the dread. This series, while fun, doesn’t quite reach that same level.

Is The Creep Tapes Worth Watching?

If you liked the Creep films or enjoy horror that mixes awkward humor with unsettling tension, then The Creep Tapes is worth your time, and it leans hard into what made the original movies so good.

It’s weird, dark, and oddly funny, in all the best ways.
