Found Footage Horror on Shudder
Do you have a Shudder subscription? If not, what are you doing with your life? It has so many good films available and is well priced too, go and get one right now.
Back? Good.
If you like found footage movies, Shudder has you covered with some of the best films for you to watch in this genre.
Below are some of my recommendations.
You’re welcome.
Hell House LLC
A team of people turn an abandoned hotel into a haunted house attraction, only to discover the building’s dark history is all too very real.
The film has some clever scares and a decent story as far as haunted house stories go, and the film builds the dread and I guarantee at least one of the jump scares WILL get you.
The film also has 3 sequels, but none match up to the original but they are still worth watching.
And a new entry titled Hell House LLC: Lineage will be arriving later in 2025.

Creep
Shudder has both Creep films available to watch, and the new Creep Tapes as well, but the first film in the franchise is the best one.
The film is about videographer who accepts a seemingly harmless job filming a man’s video diary, but things quickly spiral into, shall we say, some unsettling territory.
Mark Duplass is brilliant as the ‘Creep’ and this one brings the anxiety and unsettling fears to the forefront.

Noroi: The Curse
This Japanese horror is a bit slow paced, but stick with it, as it is ameticulously constructed puzzle of interviews, old tapes, and investigations into a paranormal mystery.
Its slow burn actually works very well, as it builds an atmosphere of dread that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Deadstream
This film is funny, but also brings a few decent jump scares as well, as it mixes found footage horror with humor.
It’s about a disgraced streamer who live-broadcasts from a haunted house to regain his audience after being cancelled, but finds himself fighting for survival.
This film balances humor and scares expertly as said, and it’s a chaoctic but very fun film to watch.

Host
This film was filmed entirely during the pandemic, and is one of the best webcam/Zoom-based horror films you can watch.
It shows a group of friends who unwittingly summon a spirit during an online séance.
It’s Short, intense, and has some really strong moments.

V/H/S Franchise
The V/H/S franchise is an anthology series featuring a collection of short found footage films, each with its own and story.
Some are better than the others, but you should still give them all a watch, including the new entry, V/H/S Beyond, which is really good.
V/H/S/Halloween will be a new entry coming to Shudder in 2025.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum
Set in one of South Korea’s most infamous real-life haunted locations, this film follows a group of ghost hunters livestreaming their exploration of the asylum.
The performances are pretty good and it has a very unsettling atmosphere and is one of the scariest found footage films you can watch…..Probably.

Lake Mungo
A found footage/mockumentary film that has a hell of a lot of depth, and the film is less about the ghost story and more about the emotions.
The story unfolds through interviews and found footage clips as a grieving family uncovers some secrets about their deceased daughter.
This one keeps you hooked.

Ghostwatch
This British TV movie is presented as a live paranormal investigation, and to say it caused a national outcry when it aired in 1992 in the UK would be an understatement.
It was actually banned from airing for many years, and it’s a brilliant blend of realism and horror.

Late Night With The Devil
This one has similar vibes to Ghostwatch, and while it isn’t as good, it’s still worth a watch.
Set in the 1970s, it follows a late-night TV host as his show descends into chaos during a live paranormal segment, and brings the the 70’s vibes including rubbish clothing.

One Cut Of The Dead
Want a low budget film with Zombies? Well, One Cut Of The Dead is what you need.
The film Starts as a traditional found footage horror, it evolves into something far more creative and rewarding.
It’s fairly original and has a lot going for it, but best you know very little before watching it.

Grave Encounters
This one also has a sequel on Shudder, but it’s nowhere as good as the first one, but still worth a watch.
In Grave Encounters, we have a reality TV crew who are investigating an abandoned asylum and it’s pretty well done for the simple concept.
It has a claustrophobic setting and is pretty entertaining overall and while not overly original and the acting is not the best, it’s still worth a place on your watch list as you will find a lot to like about it.

REC
4 films are available to watch in this franchise, and the first 2 are strong entries, but the final 2 are a bit meh.
But the first REC film is fantastic and is a masterpiece in found footage.
The film follows a reporter and her cameraman as they cover a firehouse story and is a blend of zombie horror and claustrophobic terror.
If you haven’t watched this classic, what is wrong with you?

The Medium
The Medium is one of the most interesting found footage films you can watch, and follows a shaman’s family as they confront a terrifying possession.
It’s a slow burn but quite intense and is a film that will captivate you.
While it probably goes on a bit too long this one keeps you guessing and intrigued until the end.

The Taking of Deborah Logan
This film is yet another possession movie, but one that is done pretty well with some excellent performances.
It has plenty of creepy moments and blends real world fears into the mix.
Despite the cliched final act, the film has plenty of atmosphere and is a film where you really connect with the characters and what is going on.

Trollhunter
Trollhunter combines folklore, humor and strong visuals to create a rare blend of fantasy and found footage.
It’s about a group of students who stumble upon a government conspiracy to hide the existence of trolls, and is well acted and the camera work isn’t annoying either.
It’s one of the best found footage movies available to watch.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes
If you enjoy watching an unsettling horror movie with a gritty, realistic feel, this one will be right up your street.
It has a very intense atmosphere and lots of tension and is a movie you won’t forget watching in a hurry.
It won’t be the easiest film to watch for some as it follows a serial killer with some strange fetishes.

As Above, So Below
Set in the catacombs beneath Paris, this film follows a group of explorers who find themselves trapped in a maze.
It combines historical mysteries with some supernatural terror, and will keep you gripped.
It has plenty of atmosphere that combines multiple elements as you sit back and enjoy the ride this film brings.

The Houses October Built
If you don’t like clowns, probably best to give this one a miss.
It captures the creepy, claustrophobic atmosphere of haunted attractions fairly well and has some genuinely tense moments too.
While it is not overly original and does fall into some predictable horror clichés, it’s still a pretty entertaining watch.
