M.O.M. Mothers of Monsters is a film with twists and turns and a strong lead performance. But it also drags on for too long.
Synopsis
Directed by Tucia Lyman, the movie tells the story of Abbey (Melinda Page Hamilton), who becomes increasingly convinced that her son Jacob is a bit of a nut job.
To prove her point, she starts recording him secretly with her phone and later sets up hidden cameras around the house.
My Thoughts
Mothers of Monsters makes you feel like you’re uncovering the story alongside Abbey in the way it is presented, and I really enjoyed the style the film was delivered in.
While the film is told from Abbey’s viewpoint, the way the footage is edited makes us question her a lot as well, with hints about her past adding to the uncertainty and mystery.
While the story line is a little on the predictable side, the final act delivered and makes it all worth while.
Melinda Page Hamilton performance is really good, and really she drags the movie through and while the mystery is not about her, the movie is actually all about her.
While it does drag the longer it goes on (It really needed to be shorter), and has some questionable dialogue, for such a low-budget film it effectively creates a tense and cramped atmosphere and is a decent little indie horror film to pass the time.
It will keep you guessing, most of the time.
Good Points
Presentation: The found-footage style presented like a cluttered computer screen with video clips, adds a lot of immersion.
Intriguing Narrative: The film’s editing and the hints about Abbey’s mental state keep you questioning what’s real and guessing until the end.
Tense Atmosphere: The film uses its limited budget to create a claustrophobic and unsettling environment.
Bad Points
Too Long: The film needed to be shorter as it does drag the longer it goes on and loses some tension.
Predictable Plot: Jacob’s character arc follows familiar horror tropes, and while the film keeps you guessing, sometimes it’s a bit predictable.
Underdeveloped Backstory: The film’s exploration of Abbey’s past and its relevance to the present is brief and not fully explored.
Is It Worth Watching?
Despite being too long, hang on in there with this one as it’s a decent little found footage movie with some good twists.
But as said, it isn’t without it’s flaws so go in not expecting too much and I think you might somewhat enjoy it.
