Ragini MMS is a movie about a sex tape. Similar to Paranormal Activity with an adult Bollywood twist.
Synopsis
Ragini and her boyfriend Uday plan a weekend getaway to a secluded bungalow in the forest, where Uday secretly hopes to make and sell a sex tape. But, their plans take a terrifying turn as they become trapped in a nightmare of paranormal activity.
My Thoughts
This film draws some clear inspiration from the Paranormal Activity movie franchise, but it has a distinct Indian twist that makes it also feel a bit different.
Most of the story unfolds in a haunted building where the usual events like flickering lights and creepy shadows set the stage and the horror ramps up when a vengeful spirit begins to attack them during their intimate moments.
The dark rooms, mysterious settings, and mirrors all help heighten the suspense and Raj Kumar Yadav’s portrayal of Uday transitions from being brash and insensitive to genuinely terrified, while Kainaz Motivala’s potrayal of Ragini is believable, especially as she finds herself trapped and desperate to escape and you cannot help but for her survival.
The climax (No pun intended) ties it all together quite well, and is also a bit rushed but overall it was a satisfying experience watching this one. The atmosphere in Ragini MMS is quite good, and blends sex and horror in quite an effective way.
I went in this movie with low expectations, and while it sounds all a bit silly, something about this movie I actually really like, it’s actually half decent, albeit with flaws too. The dread factor is in how vulnerable and isolated the couple is, which creates a perfect setting for the horror.
The grainy visuals, camera angles, and dark atmosphere make the experience feel very real and alongside the genuine reactions of the two lead actors add some depth and intensity, although the timing at parts was a bit off.
Ragini MMS is Bollywood’s version of Paranormal Activity, and it doesn’t do a bad job at all, even if the hand held concept is indeed a bit annoying at times.
The film is based on a true story as well.
Good Points
Nice blend: The blend of sex and horror is handled smartly and offers something a little bit different.
Authentic Performances: The lead actors deliver natural, reactive performances and the characters’ fear and vulnerability feel real.
Strong Atmosphere: The dark, grainy visuals and setting really does create a a half decent atmosphere.
Bad Points
Poorly Timed Scares: Some of the horror moments could have been better timed to maximize their impact
Rushed Ending: The ending is is too rushed, and might leave you a bit confused about what happened.
Obvious Censor Cuts: The censor cuts are noticeable and feel a bit unnecessary.
Is It Worth Watching?
I would say so, yes. It’s not that bad at all, nothing great but it’s a bit different in certain ways. If you’re into films that combine elements of horror with some provocative content and you don’t mind a bit of B-grade horror, give it a try.
If you’re someone who prefers something a bit more traditional and high-quality, you can give it a miss.
Where To Watch
It’s available for free on YouTube if you search but I am not sure if it is an official release so won’t link to it.
